Although the speech covered topics ranging from the economy to immigration border security, the main overarching theme was unifying the country.

He started his address talking about America’s unlimited potential and mentioned rejecting the politics of revenge, retribution, and resistance. “Victory is not winning for a party but for our country,” President Trump stated.

Initially, President Trump discussed the country’s quickly growing economy. He mentioned the newly created jobs, wages rising, the millions lifted off food stamps, and lower unemployment rates.

After mentioning economic success, President Trump proudly reported that the state of our union is strong.

In conjunction with this, Trump mentioned the implementing of the First Step Act and welcomed home Matthew Charles, the first inmate to benefit from the act.

President Trump then promoted the building of the wall. “Legal immigrants enrich our nation and strengthen our society in countless ways.” “I want people to come into our country in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally,” President Trump said.

He then proposed humanitarian assistance, more law enforcement, drug detection at the borders, closing loopholes that enable child smuggling, and plans for a new physical barrier between ports of entry.

The Democratic women of Congress symbolically wore white as a tribute to the American women’s suffrage movement.

During his speech, President Trump stated, “No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women who have filled 58% of the newly created jobs last year.” There have been more women in the workforce and serving in Congress than ever before.

When he mentioned this statistic, the female democrats unexpectedly rose from their seats cheering, prompting the entire audience to begin chanting USA.

After the crowd returned to their seats, President Trump mentioned the 250 billion imposed tariffs on Chinese goods in order to protect American jobs.

President Trump wants to eliminate AIDS and HIV in the next 10 years and fight against childhood cancer with a budget of 500 million over the next 10 years.

He also mentioned building a culture that cherishes innocent life by the repeal of late term abortion. President Trump stated, “Babies born and unborn are made in the holy image of God.”

Lastly he mentioned national security. The United States is withdrawing from the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, due to Russia’s violation of its terms. Also, President Trump is scheduled to meet in Vietnam with Kim Jong Un on February 27th and 28th to fight for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

A CBS news poll taken right after the speech found that 76% of speech watchers approved of President’s Trump’s remarks. 72% approved what he had to say about immigration, and 24% disapproved of his speech.

President Trump ended his State of the Union address quoting, “I am asking you to choose greatness.”
